Washington Bear Hunt

Hey Everyone,
Just got back from a great Black Bear hunt in Washington.  Dale Matthews
with Iron Mountain Adventures (www.IronMountainAdventures.com) hooked us
up with this Washington Bear hunt.  Dale is a booking agent that
represents over 40 different outfitters.

I went on this hunt with my dad & my brother.  This was there first bear
hunt and we were all fired up!

Day 1 was cold and wet.  Not ideal for bear hunting, but I did have two
bears show up that day to my bait sight.  I decided to pass on both,
because Doc (the guide) showed me trail cam pictures of a monster in the
area.  Dad and Jarod were sitting together and got skunked the first day.

Day 2 I had two bears show up, but still just a little small, however,
right at last light big boy showed up.  The bad news was that it was to
dark for the camera by the time he committed to the bait.  Dad and Jarod
saw three bears, but could not get a shot.

Day 3 I had one small bear come in and then right at dark AGAIN we heard a
bear near by, but never came in.  Jarod and Dad had better luck.  Jarod
made a great 40 yard shot with his bow and harvested his first black bear.
We were all excited and were all able to get in on the recovery.

Day 4 was the last day and I seemed to be snake bit.  I had another young
bear show up, but the big boy just would not come in before dark.  Dad had
a nice bear come to his bait station, however, dad just never had a shot
he was comfortable with…that’s hunting.

I do not have to harvest an animal everytime.  The success, in my opinion,
is getting to share hunting camp with friends and family.  I do have to
mention this was the first bear hunt I have ever been on where I saw bears
every day.

Thanks Doc and thanks Dale for a great hunt.  I look forward to coming
back soon!  I might even bring Darrell.

If you are looking to book any kind of hunt, give Dale a call
(360-231-4381) and he can find something for you to fit your needs.  He
has actually hunted most of the places he represents and can be a great
reference.

Talk to you soon!

HUNT NEBRASKA!!!

We had a great trip with Nate Swanson and Hunt Nebraska ( www.HuntNebraskaInc.com ).

The first two days of the hunt we got some killer footage and I think we call in 7 mature birds to within 50 yards or closer.  We just could not get the shooter and camera lined out.   Sunday evening I talked Nate in to carrying his shotgun and us to split up about 200 yards to increase our odds…IT WORKED!!  Nate called in two monster toms that came on a dead run to the Pretty Boy.  Nate took one out.

That night Chris Cain, owner of Ol’Man Treestands ( www.OlManOutdoors.com ), joined us and we split up that next morning.  This time I was able to score!  As usual, I made it interesting, but you’ll have to watch the show this fall to find out HOW.

Tues morning Me & Chris set up in a brush blind up on a hill just above two big roost.  Nate sat across the valley with binos to get a birds eye view.  It was a prefect morning…calm, clear, & lots of birds.  A little after 7am Chris shot the biggest bird of the trip…a 10 incher!!

Awesome time, awesome footage, and an awesome hunt!  Thanks Nate & John. We always enjoy the time spent with you guys and Hunt Nebraska!

Henrietta, TX & Kansas!!

Henrietta…We had another exciting time in Henrietta this year, however, I ZEROED on the turkeys!! Last year I won the contest with a four bearded tom, but did not get that lucky this year.  There were 8 different TV Shows there and it was great to get the chance to see some of our old friends.

Kansas…Kansas this year was one of our best years.  We took the NSH#1 Fan winners, Dwayne & Josh, to hunt with Call of the Wild Outfitters ( www.CalloftheWildOutfitter.homestead.com ).  Day
1 produced big toms for both Dwayne and Josh.  Day 2 produced big toms for Me and Darrell.  Day 4 finished up with Dwayne taking a nice tom and Josh taking his for turkey with a bow!  Big thanks to Muzzy ( www.Muzzy.com ) for the shirts & broadheads, thanks to Victory Archery( www.VictoryArchery.com ) for supplying the arrows and Limbsaver ( www.Limbsaver.com ) for the DeadZone bow.  Also, thank you Jim Call for letting the NSH Team hunt once again.  This is one place I’ll never miss (for the fall & spring). The trip could not have been written out any better.

TURKEY RUN!!

I head out today on a 3 state turkey run…Texas, Kansas, & Nebraska.

Henrietta, TX is the first stop.  It’s time again for the Clay County Turkey Fest & Expo.  Last year I was lucky enough to take the top honors of the Celebrity Turkey Contest with a 4 bearded bird (I’d rather be lucky than good any day!).  I have no choice but try to defend my title!!  www.ClayCountyOutdoors.org

Good Ol’ Kansas is next.  Darrell and I are taking NSH #1 Fan contest winners Dwayne & Josh (Father/Son Team) to see Jim Call in Stafford, KS.  That will be a great trip and Dwayne & Josh’s first trip to Kansas.  Hopefully the weather will be nice and we can get a couple of long beards in for the father/son team.  www.CalloftheWildOutfitter.homestead.com

The third leg on my trip will be meeting up with Chris Cain, new owner of Ol’Man Treestands, & Nate Swanson of Hunt Nebraska Inc. for a Nebraska Turkey hunt.  Darrell and I hunted with Nate a couple of years ago and had great success.  I’m looking forward to another chance to stomp around the hills of Nebraska!  www.HuntNebraskaInc.com

WISH ME LUCK!!

What are we doing now?

Having a hunting tv show is a BUSINESS!  Over the last month or so, I have been hitting trade shows, working with old sponsors, trying to find new sponsors, get our Network times nailed down, finalizing our spring hunts, lining up fall hunts, lining out new shows that will air this fall…the list seems to go on and on…BUT I’m not complaining!

Darrell and I fly up to St. Louis around the first week of March to meet up with our Field Producer, Stephen Boulware.  Stephen has been busy logging tapes from this past fall and writing scripts for interviews.  For two days we will be working on interviews for the first 4 shows.  We will get to knock out the interviews, plug them into the show, and then critique ourselves on what we like and do not like.  I look forward to this, because a lot of times this is the first time Darrell and I get to see the footage from the hunts.  We try to avoid watching the footage in the field, because we are always afraid of equipment malfunctions.

After the two days with Stephen, we will head over to Heartland Productions and check on old Bob and Larry (host of ScentBlocker’s Just Hunt & Outdoor in the Heartland).  They actually finalize our shows and we have a meeting with them to talk about a new opening for Nonstop Hunting.

We are also looking forward to using some new music.  My Montana elk guide, Bugling Bob, is actually lead guitar player for Illusion 33 ( www.Ill33.com or www.myspace.com/Illusion33 ).  They are an awesome rock band and we are very lucky and proud to get a chance to use some of their awesome music in our show.

In the middle of all this, I am trying to sell a little real estate in this hard economic time and Darrell is drilling wells off the cost of Africa.  Needless to say, we stay busy!

November & December was solid hunting for the NSH team.  A long story short…

Jeff in Minnesota…passed up a nice 10 point that I should of shot, the weather got hot, shot a doe

Jeff in Illinois…saw lots of deer and lots of bucks, but just could not get a shooter to read the script.

Darrell in Kansas…as I was leaving Illinois headed to Missouri, Darrell gave me a call and gave me the good news that he has tagged out in Kansas (www.CalloftheWildOutfitter.homestead.com) with a nice 10 point with a broke G2

Jeff in Missouri…my November curse continues.  I saw a lot of nice bucks but could not get one to cooperate, but friend Colter Gerald shot a nice 150″ ten point.

Darrell in Hamilton, TX…HAS A MISS!!!  Darrell shot right over a buck @ 10 yards!!  I can not wait to see that footage.  He did redeem himself and shot a nice 8 point the next day.

Jeff in Kansas…after lots of close calls with some nice bucks, I finally took a nice 9 point…MY NOVEMBER CURSE IS OVER!!

Darrell in Albany, TX…Darrell hunts like 1 day and takes a big frame 8 point with his DeadZone bow.

Jeff in Albany, TX…I’m hunting with friend Brian Huckabay and Brian takes a monster 8 point that scores 158″ P&Y…morning #3 I took a monster bodied 8 point.  Thank you Brian and Dr. John!

2J Ranch in Evant, TX…Our first whitetial rifle hunt was with 2J Ranch…I harvested 2 bucks and Darrell got an old 8 point on New Years Eve.

Mexico…Bart Lawhorn with Victory Archery (www.VictoryArchery.com) made a 57 yard shot on a nice 10 point, I shot a nice old 8 point, Scott Shultz, with ScentBlocker, took 2 javelinas, and Darrell got his first turkey with a bow!

MY FIRST WISCONSIN BUCK!!

I got an invitation from friend Gary Fleishauer to come hunt Wisconsin this past fall.  I was really looking forward to the trip, because first of all I have never hunted Wisconsin and second they grow some good bucks in the Cheese state.

I arrived the morning of Oct. 30th and met up with Gary.  We had just enough time to go and hang a couple of Ol’Man Treestands (www.OlManOutdoors.com) for that evening and the next morning hunt.

That afternoon we saw deer all evening long…a JOHN DEERE combine that is.  All the farmers in the area were busy combining corn, so with that activity deer movement was a little slow.  The next morning was different.  We went to our second set up and right after good shooting light I heard foot steps.  When I turned around and saw a tall tine 9 point headed our way.  My first thought was to pass since I just started my hunt, but as he got closer and hung around, I decided to let him have it!  The VForce arrow (www.VictoryArchery.com) disappeared behind the shoulder and the buck made a dash right out in the middle of a fresh cut corn field.  I actually lost sight of the buck, but I remember thinking there was no way he made it across that field.  Well, he didn’t!  After getting out of the Ol’Man Treestands and going back to get Gary, we were able to walk right up on my first Wisconsin buck.  He was a heavy horned deer with cool character.

I have already accepted Gary’s invitation for next year and I am looking forward to hunting in Wisconsin again.  Thank you Gary for the invite…I had a great time!

JEFF GOES BACK TO WYOMING!!

After our South Dakota trip, I headed back to Whitetail Creek Outfitters (www.WhitetailCreek.com) to try to fill my Antelope tag.  We just had a couple of days so I decided to try out the rifle.

This go around I was being guided by Brad (one of the owners of Whitetail Creek Outfitters).  Day 1 started off very exciting.  We spotted a monster Pronghorn with two other smaller bucks feeding in an open field.  We came up with a game plan to try a stalk.  Once we got in position, it just so happen the buck I was after was right on top of a hill about 250 yards away.  It was not a safe shot due to the background, so we patiently waited…and waited…and waited.  That darn thing would not cooperate and just stayed on the very top of the rise.  We could not move, because of the open terrain, so we just held tight.  Long story short, the trophy ended up crossing on to the neighbors and we were out of luck.

Day two had us spotting lots of Antelope, but just could not find one big enough…until we spotted a nice buck drop off into this canyon.  We ended up belly crawling up to the edge of the canyon and spotted a smaller buck & the bigger buck feeding @ about 325 yards.  I got set up and squeezed off a shot and the big Pronghorn hit the ground.  Brad and I both were both shocked and then excited.  I have never claimed to be a long range rifle shot, so 325 yards is a long ways to this bowhunter.

That was a great finish to my Wyoming trip.  Thank you Brad and Keith for a great hunt!

SOUTH DAKOTA

I apologize for being so far behind.  I have been hunting for almost a solid 60 days.

South Dakota

October 17th, my Dad and I got a chance to bowhunt southcentral South Dakota.  Jim Call (www.CalloftheWildOutfitter.homestead.com 620 727 1444) lined us up on the property and told me they have turkey hunted the area and saw a lot of deer.  My main goal on this trip was to get me Dad his first bow kill.

We met up with land owner, Kelly Riser, and got a quick tour of the property.  We picked out a couple of good spots to hang our Ol’Man Treestands (www.OlManOutdoors.com).  Right at daylight on the 3rd day of the hunt, Dad had a young 10 point that was headed his way.  Dad was not going to be picky being it was going to be his first bow harvest, so when the buck came by at 15 yards he pulled back his DeadZone Bow (www.Limbsaver.com) and made a perfect shot.  The buck disappeared in a standing corn field, so Dad decided to wait on me before tracking.

When I pulled up, I was unaware of anything, until I looked and noticed a VForce arrow (www.VictoryArchery.com) was missing.  Dad and Mat (camera guy) were trying to pull a fast one on me, but after noticing a VForce arrow missing, I started to snoop around and found it stuck in the ground coated with sign from Muzzy (www.Muzzy.com) to Firenock (www.Firenock.com).  They finally gave me the scoop and about 100 yards into the corn field Dad had recovered his first bow harvest.  He was pumped and so was I!!

After that experience, Dad is now hooked on bowhunting.  Congrats Dad on your first deer with a bow!!
