I LOVE SOUTH TEXAS!!

Darrell and I just got back from South Texas and it was an action packed 3 days!  We were hunting with www.LazyRHunts.com and it was actually very relaxing.  We have been bowhunting nonstop since August and just seemed very relaxing to be rifle hunting.  The reason I mention this is that when we are bowhunting we are constantly worried about the weather, wind direction, moving our Ol’Man treestands (www.OlManOutdoors.com) trying to get close enough to the right buck.  When we were able to take the rifles we were able to watch deer from a distance and we were not quite as worried about our movement, etc.

However saying that we ended up taking more animals with our Mathews bows (www.MathewsInc.com) than we did with our rifles.  Darrell took a nice buck and coyote with his rifle and two javelinas with his Mathews.  I took one management buck and one cull buck with my rifle and two hogs AND two javelinas with my Mathews…and this is all within 3 days!

We will get two solid shows out of this trip…and of course…my buck was bigger than Darrell’s.  Thank you Christopher & Maria Roswell and Dean for another exciting trip south.

HAVE YOU EVER USED A BUCK DECOY?

I have had my first experience with a buck decoy and I am sold! I went over to Illinois the week before the first shotgun season to do some bowhunting on some ground that Jim Call (www.callofthewildoutfitter.homestead.com) lined up. After fighting some warm weather we had a little front move in that really got the deer moving. We got in our Ol’Man Treestands (www.olmanoutdoors.com) around 2:30 pm that afternoon and before I even had my Mathews (www.MathewsInc.com) pulled up we spotted a nice 8 point with a doe about a 100 yards out. I had a buck decoy set up about 15 yards out into a wheat field and the buck and doe were both staring in our direction. They then started coming right to the decoy. I could not do anything but watch and hope they will hang around long enough for me to get my Mathews pulled up. They got within about 50 yards and the nice buck started chasing the doe again. I was able to hurry my Mathews up the tree and get everything ready in case they came back. Not long a doe jumped into our wheat field from the same timber the buck and doe had disappeared. Ten minutes later the same buck also jumped into the field, but this time I was ready. The pair was about 125 yards out and after I snort-wheezed a few times the buck thought he would come over and teach my buck decoy a lesson. After the buck displayed some dominance he quartered away from me at 20 yards and I sent a Muzzy (www.Muzzy.com) through both lungs. Man was I pumped!! I am a believer in decoys. There is no way I would have got a shot at this buck without one. Thank you Jim Call (www.callofthewildoutfitter.homestead.com) for another fantastic hunt.

Jeff is headed to OK

I am headed to Mine and Darrell’s property in Oklahoma in the morning.  Hopefully bucks will be moving a little since we are getting close to Nov.

Darrell went up a couple of weeks ago and had good luck on seeing a lot of young bucks, but the big boys did not seem to be moving much.  Darrell did report the area looks good and there were a lot of tracks.  With corn being so high ($ wise), a lot of farmers have planted it this year in our area.  I love standing corn, because that is more cover and hiding place for wildlife in general.

Wish me luck and hopefully I will have some pictures to post soon!
